of Innovation as one of 25 Laureates for the prestigious
awards program, which celebrates those who leverage new
and existing technologies to benefit humanity and which
uses technology to address the " myriad of challenges
we face as a global community". He was chosen from
some 320 applications from 80 countries for his work on
the Enlace Quiché project now transformed into a
Guatemalan NGO. Read more about the 2004 laureates on the
Tech
Museum web site.
UPDATE: Andy won one of the
five final awards on November 10th, 2004, the "Microsoft
Education Award." Here is an extract from a Press Release:
"Enlace Quiché was launched in 2000 by
the Academy for Educational Development and USAID
to demonstrate uses of information and communications technologies
to strengthen the training of bilingual (Spanish-Mayan)
teachers. Microsoft became an active supporter in 2002.
The theme throughout has been helping Mayan communities
and schools to cross hte digital divide without leaving
their culture and language behind. Now functioning as an
independent Guatemalan NGO, Enlace's legacy includes 28
school-based technology centers, 14 interactive Mayan-language
CD-ROMs, a virtual community, and a training center. Through
these efforts, a rapidly growing critical mass of empowered
Mayans are harnessing computer and Internet as tools for
development and for strengthening their identity."
